On Sunday, August 26, 2018, over 1000 Seventh-day Adventists and community members traveled from Trelawny, St. Ann and several other parishes across Jamaica to the inaugural staging of the North Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists’ (NJC) Beach and Reach, at the Burwood Beach in Falmouth, Trelawny. The programme was held under the theme “Pray and Play”, encouraging the youth and old to find time to fulfill the gospel mission, even while they seek recreation.

The day commenced with a grand praise and worship exercise, prayers, and a special message from Pastor Devon Heath, motivating the attendees to always have wholesome Christian fun, that does not conflict with their faith in Jesus Christ. Dr. Karl Archer, President of North Jamaica Conference, then officiated over the baptismal service of 10 individuals, who came to take their stand with Jesus.

Afterwards, the patrons enjoyed themselves with water activities, football, volleyball, dominoes, board games, giveaways, food, fun and fellowship. Young and old set their years and cares aside and basked in the splendour of Sunday’s sun, joined by several NJC staff members, to include administrators, pastors and office workers. Moreover, scores of regular attendees to the beach, from various communities, joined the event and expressed their appreciation of the quality gospel production put on by the church, which stood in stark contrast to the type of events they usually see at a beach.

Another major highlight of the day was the NJC Women’s Creative Fest, which brought together displays from various churches, utilizing plantains. From pastry, to punches, craft items and clothing, the ladies used both the plant and its fruit to demonstrate their innovative capacity. Ocho Rios SDA took first place, whereas Brown’s Town SDA was first runner up.

The day culminated with a grand gospel concert, with musical performances by Fred Robertson, EVINCE, Flavia Beswick, Jewel Osbourne, B.A.S.I.C., Carey Sayles, Hilkiah Jones, backed by Gamel Grant and TM Sound and Band, with Pastor Jermaine Johnson, Music Ministries Coordinator of NJC, as Master of Ceremonies.

When the programme came to an end, the audience was still shouting out for more, an indication of the refreshing experience they all enjoyed.

Beach and Reach is a production of the departments of Music, Adventist Youth, Communication, and Women’s Ministries in the North Jamaica Conference. The programme intertwines beach with outreach, and will be held annually.
