May 25, 2019 has gone down in history as a day when the Family and Children's Ministries Departments came together for a grand convention, under the theme “Parents – Encourage, Enable, Include Me!”

A large congregation of children, parents and well-wishers gathered at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brown’s Town for a day of motivational presentations, inspirational music and a soul-stirring sermon.

A major highlight of the day-long programme was a powerful lay-activities/10-minutes segment done by Carsan Hylton, a nine-year-old student at the Falmouth SDA Preparatory School. He used balloons to emphasize the importance of including children in the mission of the church.

The sermon was delivered by a confident and articulate Michaelia Foster, a student at the Falmouth Primary School. She made an impassioned plea to parents “to give children a chance to do their part in winning souls for God’s kingdom.” “All we need is for you to encourage, enable and include us,” said Foster.

Children and Adolescents Ministries director Elder Christine Shand was elevated with the support and participation from children across the conference. “What a blessing it was! It was a very euphoric experience to see the children ministering for the Lord. We need not worry about the future of the church,” Shand said.

Other highlights of the day were presentations on parenting by Pastor Jermaine Johnson, Communication, Education and Music Ministries Director of the NJC; Pastor Carlington Hylton, Ministerial and Family Ministries Director, as well as Pastor Astor Bowers, Executive Secretary of North Jamaica Conference.

The day’s activities were interspersed by rousing musical items from choirs and groups from various congregations across the conference.

“The convention was a success. Seeing the parents coming out to showcase the children, with a 50/50 ratio, proved to me that the children want to be involved in the mission of the church,” said Pastor Hylton. “The children are asking parents and church leaders not only to tell them about mission, but to show them”, Pastor Hylton further emphasized.

The Family and Children’s Convention was held with the objectives of equipping and motivating parents and children to be more involved in the mission of the church, and ensuring that children are given a chance to showcase their God-given talents.

“We believe that the objectives of the convention were met”, said Shand and Hylton. To God be the Glory!
