The North Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (NJC) family has been plunged into mourning following the loss of two of its stalwart youth leaders, both from the Seventh-day Adventist Church, St. Ann’s Bay.

Official reports are that on Sunday, December 30, 2018, one of the youth from the St. Ann’s Bay congregation celebrated her birthday. During the activities, which took place in the vicinity of Silver Sands/Duncans Bay Beach, in Duncans, Trelawny, three of the participants were in the water during the late afternoon. It is reported that they got into difficulties, when they were unknowingly carried away by the waves. One managed to escape, whereas the other two went missing.

One was later recovered from the water, and was subsequently pronounced dead at the Falmouth hospital. The third person, the son of Pastor Mobrey Lewis, NJC Sabbath School and Personal Ministries Director, remains missing at sea, as at the time of this publication.

Efforts by the JDF coast guard to locate the missing person have proven futile and very difficult, given the current conditions of the sea.

North Jamaica Conference continues to pray for a miracle in this case, while holding all the families concerned, including the wider St. Ann’s Bay Church and St. Ann Youth Federation families, in prayers.

Dead is Brother Duran Bryan, 30. Missing is Brother Chavar Lewis, 31. President of North Jamaica Conference Pastor Karl Archer appeals: “Please keep the families and the Conference in your prayers, as we keep our eyes fixed on the Great Expert of all things, Jesus Christ.”

Correction to Earlier Publication

The preliminary report had mentioned that one person got into difficulties and was assisted, thus leading to the other two getting into difficulties. The latest developments reveal, rather, that Bryan and Lewis got into difficulty, along with the third person; but never managed to escape the perils of the sea. We apologize for any misunderstanding caused by the earlier report.

Latest Development

Lewis' body was eventually recovered from the sea. Details of the funeral arrangements for both young men will ensue. Let's keep the families and church in prayers.
